Just when you thought Elon Musk couldn’t get any more ambitious, he spent $90 million firing a CONVERTIBLE into the dark depths of outer space.

That’s no joke, people. Merely a couple years after launching the Space X Falcon rocket, its shuttle has officially come within striking distance of our neighboring red planet. But this isn’t your average space shuttle — in typical quirky Elon Musk fashion, Space X launched an astronaut strapped into a bright red Tesla Roadster, and the dynamic duo has been sailing through the Milky Way ever since.

While SpaceX noted that the pair successfully achieved their “first close approach” with Mars in 2020, it’s expected to simply be the first of many. Spaceman is expected to get even closer in the future — the bright red (although rapidly fading) Tesla will pass by at a much, much closer 1.4 million mile distance on April 22, 2035, if all goes to plan, and thereafter, it should make its way back to Earth in 2047. This, of course, assumes that it doesn’t collide with Venus on the way, a small but real possibility.
