Serbia’s Plans for a Canal to The Mediterranean

Serbia is planning to construct a 17 billion dollar, 650 kilometer long waterway connecting the Danube River to the Mediterranean Sea. In southern Serbia, the sources of the Morava and Vardar rivers lie only 30 kilometers away from each other. The Morava flows north into the Danube and the Vardar flows south into the Mediterranean. For this reason, Serbia is considering constructing a massive waterway connecting the two rivers, and therefore the Danube and Mediterranean.
